September 2, 3398 8:25 PM EST -- Cerchio Corp. Logs

Log files pertaining to this date: 1

e.s.lamarre@cerchio project/mir/log/02093398
Subject has discovered existence of external networking through casual communication conducted near the subject; has revealed plans to access information thereon. Agreement reached that allowing subject uncontrolled information flow would be a CODE BLACK security risk, repeat HIGHEST ORDER security risk.

Suggested course of action to remove ALL networked devices from within access range of subject until further notice. This includes but is not limited to subject's quarters and adjacent surveillance quarters. Networked devices that cannot be removed must be made restricted-access by means of PHYSICAL security devices capable of withstanding localised overpressure of at least 5psi and localised temperature change of +/-500˚F/s. Security devices must be removed ONLY when authorised personnel are directly attending to the machines.

Thank gods. Finally.

I don't want to say I'm happy to see her crack, exactly, but it's for the best, even if she doesn't know it.

From: e.s.lamarre@cerchio.co.at.el
To: m.alroas@cerchio.co.at.el

Yeah. Early days yet, but looks like we're getting somewhere. Maybe we'll see a good song out of her soon.

She's a brave little trooper, all right. Even if I know she's advanced intelligence-wise, it's still pretty impressive to see her level of self-analysis and willpower. I'm almost kind of proud.

This just isn't looking good, is it?

Sorry to be so pessimistic, but I can't stop thinking about this. I guess I feel like shutting down the project is looking pretty inevitable. Especially since funding isn't infinite and we really don't have much to show for seven years of work. And I guess I just want to be emotionally prepared for that.

It's a strange request, but if we have to euthanise her, can I be the one to do it? I kind of want to make sure she goes out happy.

---

From: e.s.lamarre@cerchio.co.at.el
To:[list]

I think it's too early to say it's inevitable, but I understand wanting to be prepared. I think most of us would be a bit sad to see her go.

I'll try and keep this going as long as possible, for what it's worth, but sure, if it comes to it, you can be the one to do it. I don't have any objections to that.

---

From: m.alroas@cerchio.co.at.el
To:[list]

Heh, perhaps we should throw her a last day party. If we don't need her as a weapon any more, may as well give her as much as we can before she has to go.

Unless you think that's too risky.

---

From: e.s.lamarre@cerchio.co.at.el
To: m.alroas@cerchio.co.at.el

Probably not a great idea. It's not that I think there's a risk of her turning on us, but I think it's going to be better for most of us involved with the project if we're able to leave without ever having really related to her as feeling. I can understand that you don't feel that way, but I think it'll be better on most people's consciences if they don't have that kind of contact.

We don't want to be known as a company for running a project where most of the employees lost their sanity after they left. This project has already had a pretty high drop-off rate due to its nature.

Make your peace however you need to, though.

---

From: m.alroas@cerchio.co.at.el
To: e.s.lamarre@cerchio.co.at.el

At the risk of asking a deeply personal question... how have you made your peace?

Not meant as an attack. I guess I'm just kind of curious.

---

From: e.s.lamarre@cerchio.co.at.el
To: m.alroas@cerchio.co.at.el

I've just always believed it was worth it in the long run. A weapon like her could put an end to wars near-instantly if she's used right. In the long run, countless lives could be saved. It's not great that she has to suffer, but how many more would suffer needlessly otherwise due to prolonged wars? That's really why I started this project.

Kind of changes your feelings if she's useless, but I still don't regret that I tried, really.

And no worries. I didn't take it as an attack.

e.s.lamarre@cerchio project/mir/log/24123397
Subject reports purpose of song as "to help my feelings live in the world"; description is fairly basic description of song magic. Examination of song lyrics seems to suggest little effective power other than to engender emotion in targeted individuals. Song logged in Ar Tonelico as EXEC_HARMONIOUS/.

Suggested course of action to provide stimulus appropriate to desired song output. Advice to subject to continue working on song magic.

That's really the best she can do after, what, seven years now?

---

From: e.s.lamarre@cerchio.co.at.el
To:[list]

To say it's "the best she can do" is a bit of a skewed analysis. It's the only thing she's done so far.

Her songs come from her thought patterns. To date we haven't provided much stimulus on that front because we wanted to see what she'd make on her own. Now we know she's conflict-averse, if we change her thought patterns, we should get something else.

---

From: a.kyhar@cerchio.co.at.el
To:[list]

> if we change her thought patterns, we should get something else.

GIGO, basically.

---

From: e.s.lamarre@cerchio.co.at.el
To:[list]

More like "nothing in, garbage out". Her default thought patterns are just basically useless for our purposes, but now that we know that, it's not as hard to resolve as it could be.

---

From: m.alroas@cerchio.co.at.el
To:[list]

Might be harder than you think. Say what you like about the relevance of the song, but there's something pretty surprising about it. Not exactly the first thing I'd think of after having been a lab rat for seven years. She might be tough to change.

I must say I feel pretty glum about what'll happen if she turns out to be useless. It's not like you could adopt her out, especially if we're going to try and influence her thought structure to heighten her aggression (I presume that's what you want to do). We'd probably have to euthanise her, and I'd be sad to see her go. Not often you get hope like that in this world. Pity it isn't well founded.

---

From: e.s.lamarre@cerchio.co.at.el
To:[list]

It probably isn't. There's a possibility it could be restorative, and while we didn't create her to craft restoratives, that would still be a useful sideline for her to have. However, chances are it's worthless.

It's her first try, so we shouldn't expect too much. Still, it's disappointing. I know we were all looking forward to big things from her.

e.s.lamarre@cerchio project/mir/log/02103397
Subject expresses hostility, fear and ambiguous desire to take human life. Threat level subsequently raised: consider this a CODE RED level scenario, repeat SEVERE security risk.

Elevated threat level is expected to be temporary as subject is considered relatively unlikely to act due to fear and ambiguated emotions surrounding taking of human life. Regardless, for the time being subject should be denied access to quarters beyond 7A. All doors from 7A must remain locked and all possible exit points, including dividing walls, secured by armed personnel.

Information contained in subject's blog post considered to be of highly sensitive and potentially problematic nature. Since it contains no useful information not duplicated in logs, post has been removed from server.

I don't think she lacks power, she just lacks motive. Attempting to artificially generate an emotional stimulus could have unpredictable results though. I was considering just leaving her. She'll figure it out herself.

Subject expresses interest in and has begun creation of alternate fantasy world without humans, named "Reyvateilia". Possible response to feelings of alienation, inferiority, isolation. Probably a fantasy akin to those demonstrated by children of subject's approximate emotional age; as such do not consider threat level to have risen. However, monitor for hints of rebellious thought processes.

...I thought we weren't admitting that she had emotions now? You're basically saying you can apply human developmental psychology to her, which I think says a lot.

I know this is warfare, gods know we can't make a crying deal out of every casualty, I knew this when I started and honestly I was prepared to see this through even if it turned out like this, but....

Personally? I'm having a hard time keeping this up. It's not any great moral qualm I have-- if it were I wouldn't have signed up for this. I just don't like the way I'm left feeling when I've never once treated her better than a machine and she still runs after me when I try and leave. Even a dog will run away if you kick it enough times, but I can be jabbing needles into her and it'll be like I could do that all day and she wouldn't move because she's so damn lonely and bored. And I can't even do anything to be like, look, it's not so bad, have some reason to not feel like a piece of meat.

I'm not bailing, I'm just saying understand how hard this is for us. Can you cut us some slack?

---

From:a.kyhar@cerchio.co.at.el
To: r.zzhon@cerchio.co.at.el

You say you know this is warfare, but I really don't think you get it. It doesn't matter if she's intelligent or feeling. In warfare you stick needles into real kids if it'll help you win. How long have you been in this business again?

---

From: e.s.lamarre@cerchio.co.at.el
To:[list]

> I'm not bailing, I'm just saying understand how hard this is for us. Can you cut us some slack?

It's important not to stimulate the emotions that have already developed in her. If we need to shut them down it's going to be easier if there's less clutter in there to deal with.

> Aren't we stimulating her emotions by making her upset and frustrated?

You shouldn't be trying to make her upset and frustrated. The point is to give her absolutely neutral, that is, emotionless stimulus.

You know, I kind of think she's got every right to be asking if she's better than us right now. Why was the directive yesterday "don't change our treatment of her" when she obviously has demonstrated a need to be treated like us?

Gods' sake, no! Have we really lost all sense of ethical responsibility here? I'm sorry but this has been on my mind since there started being noises about her having emotions and everything just carries on like normal here. Please advise.

> I'm finding it really hard to feel comfortable with the direction you're taking the project in.

Then, with all respect, get the hell out.

Ethical responsibility? Don't you want to think about our ethical responsibility to EVERYONE IN THE WORLD? More powerful β-Reyvateil than Shurelia. If that thing turns on us we're dead.

I'd like to see you take ethical responsibility for that one when the news cameras are pointing in your face, or more likely, at your wife's dead body.

Not what this project is about. We're not babysitters. She's a military-grade weapon or she's nothing.

Call for responses, _please_. Sane ones. Thank you. Please tag keep/discard as appropriate.

---

From: a.kyhar@cerchio.co.at.al

Keep. We've sunk far too much money, time and energy into this project to just scrap it.

Monitor her closely, keep the area she's in SECURE, work on a way to fix whatever glitched up. I think she's salvageable, just needs the right code hacked back into her head, so to speak.

---

From: r.zzhon@cerchio.co.at.el
To:[list]

Keep. Give her a blog, we'll see how she's developing and most importantly _what_. At the very least we'll get something useful out of seeing how something like her thinks.

If it turns out she's not weapons-grade, sure, we might need to get rid, but she's not doing any harm now, so let's learn while we can.

Unpopular vote here, but discard. I wasn't decided before but having this discussion has made up my mind. I'm frankly quite uncomfortable with having it be alive. I always worried what would happen if this went down and now it has. I think we should have had a better contingency plan in the first place, to be honest.

Let's get this over with and go back to something more real, something that isn't going to keep me up at nights waiting for the freaking apocalypse.
